Tale of the Tape: Athletics 2, White Sox 3

by Joe Binder
After losing the first four games of the season series, the White Sox finally pulled out a victory thanks to 6.1 scoreless innings from the revamped Reynaldo Lopez. Eloy Jimenez helped chip in with an opposite field shot on his bobblehead night and Alex Colome closed it out for his 23rd save of the year.

The Good

  • Reynaldo Lopez (SP): 6.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K
  • Jose Abreu (1B): 2-3, 2B (25), BB
  • Eloy Jimenez (LF): 1-3, HR (19), RBI, run scored on his bobblehead night
  • Leury Garcia (CF-LF): 1-4, 2B (22), 2 stolen bases in the same inning, run scored

The Bad

  • Ryan Goins (3B): 0-3, 2 LOB as well as a 9th inning error that allowed the game’s only two runs to score with two outs

Moment of the Game

After a combination of Reynaldo Lopez and Evan Marshall loading the bases in the seventh, Ricky Renteria turned to Aaron Bummer to get out of the jam. The lefty managed to get a fly ball to right where Jon Jay made a great diving play to protect the lead.

Stats On 35th – Let’s Break this One Down by the Numbers

Today’s Numbers:

33.8, 99.5, 58, 9, 20

33.8

Today’s MVP in terms of Win Probability Added (WPA) is Reynaldo Lopez. The righty added 33.8 percentage points to the Sox probability of winning today’s game thanks to his solid performance on the mound. The runner-up was reliever Aaron Bummer at 15.7 percent.

99.5

Reynaldo Lopez was bringing the heat all night long. Because of it, he owns the crown for velocity leaders from tonight’s game by peaking at 99.5 mph. Even in the seventh inning, his final pitch was clocked in at 96.2 mph, showing that his arm was very lively.

58

This isn’t the number you want to see when it comes to Aaron Bummer and Alex Colome on the same night, and let me explain why. Bummer threw 27 pitches over 1.1 scoreless, while Colome ended up burning through 31 in a rough ninth inning where he gave up two unearned on a pair of walks and hits. Do the math and 27+31 equals a combined 58 pitches thrown. The Sox will have to hope Lucas Giolito can go deep into tomorrow’s ballgame.

9

Tim Anderson singled in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to nine games now. He is batting .435 (17-39) during the month of August.

20

All Leury Garcia does is get on base! He continued to be a legend by extending his on-base streak to 20 games tonight after reaching in the third inning and again in the eighth on a double.

Next Game: Giolito Day

  • Sunday: Chris Bassit (7-5, 3.80 ERA) vs. Lucas Giolito (12-5, 3.44 ERA), 1:10 PM CT – Guaranteed Rate Field
