White Sox, Yankees announce 2020 “Field of Dreams” Game in Iowa

by Joe Binder

If you build it, they will come.

On Thursday morning, the White Sox announced they will be partnering with Major League Baseball for the first-ever major league game at the “Field of Dreams” in Iowa. According to Twitter, the game will be against the New York Yankees and take place on August 13, 2020.

This announcement comes roughly eleven hours after the MLB Twitter account dropped a teaser video, hinting at this sort of game.

The “Field of Dreams,” located in Dyersville, Iowa, will not be able to hold a massive crowd, as you could imagine. Per Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated, “Major League Baseball will begin construction on a temporary, 8,000-seat ballpark at the site.” Here is a picture that made an appearance on social media showing what this site will apparently look like.

There is no word yet on how someone will be able to get tickets to this game, or if tickets will even be made available to the public for purchase. It seems like getting the opportunity to attend this event would be similar to gaining access to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

As for the television broadcast, we unfortunately won’t be able to listen to Jason Benetti and Steve Stone announce the game from the cornfields. The game will be broadcasted on FOX, which still gives us hope for an A.J. Pierzynski appearance in the booth. It would only be fitting.

One other thing that is almost certain with this news. Since the White Sox will be on the national stage in such a big event, it is hard to imagine they will be trotting out Quadruple-A caliber players onto the field for this next year. A game of this caliber only adds fuel to the fire for the thought they are ready to put some respect back on their name and make this team a contender.

I love it! This would also be an opportune time to lift the ban of Shoeless Joe Jackson and make him eligible for the Hall of Fame which would be a cinch based on his career numbers which were outstanding even with MLB banishing him following his age 32 season. Jackson managed to post a 62.2 bWAR in a limited time frame that included parts of 13 season but the equivalent of only 9 full ones. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jacksjo01.shtml
