On Monday, the White Sox optioned outfielder Willy Garcia to the Charlotte Knights. Today, they activated beloved utility man Tyler Saladino to fill the vacant roster spot.
Saladino has been sidelined by back spasms since May 26th. He was hitting .200 with 4 RBI in just 110 official at-bats before going on the disabled list. During a 6-game rehab stint with AAA Charlotte before the All-Star Game, he hit .350 with 1 home run and 4 RBI in 20 official at-bats.
Rick Renteria has penciled in Saladino to start at second base and and bat seventh when the White Sox resume action tonight against the Mariners. Fellow utility man Yolmer Sanchez has been a pleasant surprise for the South Siders this season, so Saladino will most likely split playing time with him for the rest of the year. The White Sox clubhouse will get an energy boost heading into the second half of the season with the return of Tyler Saladino’s lively personality.
On the pitching front, the White Sox activated righty Miguel Gonzalez from AA Birmingham to fill out the 25-man roster following the Jose Quintana trade.
