White Sox Update – January 16, 2019

It didn’t seem like the Manny Machado rumors could get any crazier but here we are. Below’s a recap of the latest White Sox news and rumors from Wednesday. Since new information seems to be coming out by the hour, we’ll be sure to update this if necessary.

    • Buster Olney of ESPN began the day with a report saying the White Sox offer to Manny Machado was for 7-years, $175 million.
    • Bob Nightengale of USA Today seemingly agreed with Buster Olney in a quote tweet, saying the White Sox made this offer roughly two weeks prior.
    • It is important to note that based off these two tweets, the previous reports of Jeff Passan, also of ESPN, and Hector Gomez of Z101 Digital were pretty much thrown away. The two reported several days ago that the offer was rumored to be around 8-years, $250 million respectively.
    • Jon Heyman of FanCred, one of the few reliable sources out there, reported that the previous reports made by Olney and Nightengale of 7-years, $175 million were not just inaccurate but categorized as “way off.”
    • Then, here’s where things really took a turn. Manny Machado’s agent, Dan Lozano of MVP Sports Group released a statement about Olney’s and Nightengale’s rumors, calling them inaccurate, reckless, and a violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
    • Jon Heyman also reported on the Phillies interest in regards to Machado and Harper.
    • In less shocking news, minor league LHP Ian Clarkin was once again claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs.
    • Charlie Tilson also cleared waivers by the White Sox and optioned to Triple-A Charlotte.

  1. Usually it’s the team that comes out and denies that they made the offer to the player. When the agent does it, it really means the rumor is in fact a lie. The Phillies would have a very good reason for starting this little rumor. They want both Harper and Machado but they want Machado at a lower cost. If they can’t get him at a lower cost, they are going after Harper. So they have a very good reason to interfere in the negotiations.
