Blue Jays 6, White Sox 5: Mistakes Spoil Vaughn’s 4-Hit Effort

by Tim Moran

With men on first and third and one out in the top of the sixth, Yasmani Grandal hit a deep fly ball to left field that should’ve tied the game. Instead, Danny Mendick was nabbed at second base before a slow-trotting Reese McGuire touched home and the game remained 6-5. This microcosm of the season would cost the South Siders a shot at winning the game.

With five starters missing from the lineup, mostly due to injury, a gem was needed from Lucas Giolito, and unfortunately the towering right-hander could not provide. Two Alejandro Kirk home runs, the second on a questionable slider call, and a two-run double proved to be just enough. Andrew Vaughn‘s 4-hit day and a couple of RBI base hits were not enough for Chicago. A promising rally in the ninth inning fell short after a Jake Burger double play groundout and a Gavin Sheets strikeout.

On the bright side, Luis Robert returned from the IL and we found out that Tim Anderson will likely return in about three weeks’ time!

W: Kevin Gausman (5-3) | L: Lucas Giolito (3-2) | S: Jordan Romano (16)

Notable Performances

Andrew Vaughn: 4-5, 1 HR, 1 2B, 2 RBI

Andrew has been the engine of the White Sox offense recently, and tonight proved to be no different. Undaunted by the talented Kevin Gausman, the second-year player recorded seven total bases on the evening. It was the first four-hit game of his career, and I doubt it will be his last.

Reese McGuire: 2-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 R

After being traded from the Blue Jays shortly before the season started, McGuire had a nice revenge game tonight at the plate. Although his lazy running from third base on Grandal’s fly ball may have cost the South Siders a run, it’s nice to see him heating up at the plate a bit.

Kyle Crick: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K

Called up yesterday for this series, the veteran with a filthy slider looked great in his one inning of work. Registering a strikeout and two weak balls in play against the top of the Blue Jays lineup, Crick continues to be an interesting option for the bullpen moving forward.
