White Sox Injury Update: Clevinger, Woodford, Robert Jr, Drohan

by Jordan Lazowski

The White Sox have shuffled their roster a bit due to injury prior to Tuesday night’s contest.

According to the team’s official press release, three roster-related moves have been made:

  • Mike Clevinger to the 15-Day IL with right elbow inflammation
  • Jake Woodford activated from Triple-A Charlotte and to pitch tonight
  • Sammy Peralta designated for assignment

Clevinger, 33, has made four starts this season without much success, posting a 6.75 ERA in just 16 innings of work. He struggled once again in his latest outing against the Orioles and was slated to start tonight before his injury. Right elbow inflammation is never a great sign, especially for a pitcher like Clevinger who has a history of arm surgeries, including Tommy John Surgery. The team does not expect his stay on the IL to extend much beyond the 15-day requirement, as Clevinger has received a cortisone shot and will resume throwing in a few days.

Woodford is a veteran who will simply be buying the White Sox some time in a pinch in the rotation. The 27-year-old previously pitched parts of four seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, going 10-1 with a 4.29 ERA in 184.2 career innings. This season with Charlotte, the right-hander has a 5.26 ERA in 10 starts across 49.2 innings – so, don’t expect much from him over the next few starts that he covers for Clevinger. Of course, this could be a one night stay in Chicago for Woodford if the White Sox decide to bring up Jonathan Cannon as they did previously this season. We will await more details from the team on this topic.

Peralta, 26, had previously spent his entire career in the White Sox organization before finding himself in Seattle to start this season. He was put on waivers after a 9.24 ERA through 12.2 innings in Triple-A, and was subsequently claimed by the White Sox just two days ago. The expectation is that he will pass through waivers here once again and be removed from the 40-man roster, but stay within the organization.

With these moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains set at 40. In other injury news – this more positive – both Luis Robert Jr. and Rule 5 Draft pick Shane Drohan will continue their rehab assignments in Triple-A Charlotte tonight.
