Former White Sox manager Jeff Torborg passes away at 83

by Joe Binder

A former White Sox manager has passed away.

The team announced on Sunday evening that Jeff Torborg died this morning in Westfield, N.J. He was 83 years old.

After a 10-year career as a major league catcher with the Dodgers and Angels, Torborg remained in the game as a manager. He landed with the White Sox following a three-year stint in Cleveland and notoriously led the 1990 club to a 94-68 record during his second season. The 25-game improvement from the year prior helped him notch A.L. Manager of the Year honors for the only time in his career. Torborg remained at the helm for just one more season on the South Side, finishing second in the AL West with an 87-75 record, before landing with the Mets on a four-year, $1.7 million deal.

Ozzie Guillen, who has previously noted the significance of Torborg in his career, issued the following statement on his social media:

“I am heartbroken. My mentor and my friend has passed away. Someone who truly understood me and gave me a chance to lead, to be a captain. So much of my way of managing and being in a clubhouse came from him. To his entire family, my deepest sympathy. Jeff, I will miss you.”

On behalf of the entire Sox On 35th team, we send our condolences to Jeff’s loved ones during this difficult time.
