Jason Benetti discusses his return to the White Sox

by Joe Binder

Jason Benetti is the White Sox play-by-play broadcaster for the foreseeable future, and he couldn’t be more thrilled about the opportunity.

“I love this job so much,” Benetti said during an appearance on 670 The Score. “I want to be here and I have always wanted to be here. Just surveying how well it’s gone with Steve (Stone) and how much I’ve enjoyed it, and how great so many people in the organization have been, I want to be here.”

The White Sox announced on Thursday that they had picked up Benetti’s multi-year option, while also signing color commentator Steve Stone to a multi-year extension. The exact length of each contract is still not public knowledge, and Benetti said he’s not allowed to elaborate beyond the fact that it’s multiple years in duration.

Benetti, who is a jack of all trades when it comes to broadcasting, will enter his eighth season in the White Sox’s broadcast booth. The propellor of the fan-favorite #SoxMath segment on broadcasts, Benetti has appeared with major networks such as ESPN, NBC, and most recently, FOX Sports. Across all three networks, he has covered sports like college basketball, college football, and Major League Baseball. At the end of this most recent NFL season, Benetti also did play-by-play for the Cardinals-Falcons and Panthers-Saints matchups.

Last reaching a multi-year agreement with the White Sox in May 2017, the broadcaster projected in his interview that during 2023, he’ll call somewhere in the neighborhood of 190-200 games of football, basketball, and baseball – which will include FOX’s Saturday MLB broadcasts. He expects to also miss more time away from the White Sox in 2023 due to these added responsibilities with other networks, likely opening the door for Len Kasper to fill in during such occasions.

Benetti got candid during his interview with the Chicago radio station and touched on the difficulties that cerebral palsy brings up during his career. The 39-year-old said that despite some of the challenges, he enjoys doing things people assume he cannot do.

“To anybody out there listening,” Benetti said. “When you have something that everyday people can judge you for and you’ve chosen a judgemental industry, it is not easy.”

“I do want people to know if you have something that kind of sucks in life, the best thing you can possibly do is get good at whatever you like to do.”
