Jonathan Cannon will represent White Sox at 2023 All-Star Futures Game

One of the White Sox’s rising prospects is getting the recognition he deserves.

The team announced via Twitter that right-handed pitcher Jonathan Cannon will be representing the organization at the 2023 All-Star Futures Game in Seattle. Full rosters for the event were unveiled on Monday afternoon.

Cannon, 22, was originally selected by the White Sox in the third round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of the University of Georgia. During his three collegiate seasons, the righty owned a 3.71 ERA (63 ER/153.0 IP) with 137 strikeouts, 27 walks, and an 8.1 K/9.

In 12 starts for High-A Winston-Salem this season, Cannon is 5-1 with a 3.27 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 3.15 K/W, and 8.6 K/9 over 66.0 innings pitched. He ranks 10th in the organization’s Top 30 prospects list and has earned praise from MLB Pipeline for his offerings.

Though Cannon’s strike-throwing stands out more than his stuff, he does have an effective four-pitch mix. His best offering is his plus cutter, which improved in 2022, now sits in the upper 80s and misses more bats than the rest of his arsenal. He also has a 92-96 mph fastball with heavy sink, a low-80s slider that also made strides that year, and a mid-80s changeup with similar movement to his heater.

Though he’s 6-foot-6, Cannon has no trouble keeping his long limbs in sync and repeating his efficient delivery. He pounds the strike zone with his fastball, slider and cutter, averaging just 1.6 walks per nine innings in three years with the Bulldogs. More polished than overpowering, he stands out more for his floor than his ceiling but may not need much time in the Minors to become a No. 4 starter.
