Jose Abreu and Luis Robert are both in the running for some major awards by season’s end, but that’s not stopping them from taking home some monthly honors. Earlier this afternoon, it was announced that Abreu was named the American League Player of the Month, and Robert was named American League Rookie of the Month for the period of July and August.
Pito has been a monster at the plate, slashing .315/.359/.636 with 12 homers, 10 doubles, 32 RBI, and a .996 OPS through the end of August. His most notable stretch came against the Cubs from August 21-23, where he hit six home runs and set the franchise record for most bombs in a series. Additionally, Abreu’s 11 homers in the month was second-most behind only Frank Thomas’ 13 in 2003.
With the award, he becomes the first White Sox player to earn AL Player of the Month honors since Tim Anderson in April of last year. This is his third time winning the award, adding to April and July of 2014, his rookie season.
As for La Pantera, he has clearly made his presence known and already has become a walking highlight reel. During August, Robert hit .298/.348/.612 with eight doubles, 10 home runs, 24 RBI, 22 runs scored, and four stolen bases over 33 games. He currently has Abreu just beat with a 2.1 WAR, while leading AL position players with a 1.6 fWAR in 2020.
Like Abreu, Robert is also unsurprisingly propelling his name into the MVP race. There’s no question that after this, he should be the frontrunner for American League Rookie of the Year as well.
