The White Sox announced a pair of roster moves along with some good news prior to tonight’s series opener in Cincinnati.
Starting with the bullpen, right-handed reliever Joe Kelly has been reinstated from the Paternity List, while southpaw Sammy Peralta has been optioned back down to Triple-A Charlotte. The team also shared that both third baseman Yoan Moncada, and closer Liam Hendriks will begin their rehab assignments in the Queen City.
Kelly was placed on the Paternity List on May 2nd when Hanser Alberto was brought back from his rehab stint. Kelly has a 7.71 ERA in 4.2 IP with the White Sox this season and has spent most of the season on the IL with a right groin injury.
Peralta is being sent back to Charlotte after being called up to the team three days prior. The lefty pitched 0.2 innings in his debut in Thursday’s 12-inning loss to Minnesota, giving up two earned runs in that time.
Moncada was originally placed on the 10-day IL on April 14th after leaving a game three days earlier with lower back soreness. His bat will be nice to have back in the lineup as he was slashing .308/.325/.564 with a 143 wRC+ before the injury.
As for Hendriks, the team’s closer has been out for the whole season after being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in January. He went through his last round of chemotherapy on April 5th. On April 20th, he announced he was cancer free.
The three-time All-Star will add much-needed help to the struggling bullpen. Since signing with the White Sox, Hendriks has pitched in 128.2 IP with 75 saves while also holding a 2.66 ERA in that time frame.
