If you were wondering why the White Sox pulled Lucas Giolito after just 61 pitches this afternoon, it was injury-related. The White Sox announced that Giolito left today’s game with abdominal tightness and was going to be further evaluated.
Giolito had completed 4 innings before being pulled. He gave up just one hit across those innings, surrendering no runs with two walks and six strikeouts. He struggled with his command early in the game, but had started to settle into a groove before being pulled.
This move was likely made out of abundant caution, as the team is in the first game of a 162-game marathon and is already down one starter. At the time Giolito was pulled, the White Sox were up 3-0 and are hoping the bullpen can close off this game.
“Abdominal tightness” can mean a lot of things, so here’s hoping he’s just cramping up early in the season. We will keep you informed as more information becomes available.
