Amidst a tumultuous season on the south side of Chicago, center fielder Luis Robert Jr. has been a bright spot for the White Sox. Announced on Monday, his recent stretch of fantastic play has now earned him American League Player of the Week honors for June 19-25.
Robert Jr. was awarded the honor alongside Cincinnati phenom Elly De La Cruz after recording four homers and a .444/.524/1.111 slash line for the week. “La Pantera” started the week off strong with a two-hit, one-homer performance against the Rangers, and didn’t look back. He would reach base in every game, including a walk in one pinch-hit appearance on Tuesday, and racked up 6 runs and 5 RBIs in the timespan.
Robert Jr. certainly cemented the honor over the weekend, though, with three home runs in two victories over the Boston Red Sox. Sunday’s two-dinger effort brought in three runs and also came with a single to boot.
The 25-year-old is sporting a .269/.326/.559 line on the year to go with 8 Outs Above Average (98th percentile), good for 3.1 fWAR. His 21 bombs rank second in the American League behind only Shohei Ohtani.
