As much as White Sox fans hoped Mark Buehrle would see Cooperstown by now, the lefty has failed to garner the necessary momentum in his quest for baseball immortality.
The Hall of Fame Class of 2025 was announced this evening, with Ichiro Suzuki (99.7%), CC Sabathia (86.8%), and Billy Wagner (82.5%) being those of the 28 candidates to reach the necessary 75% of votes. Players like Carlos Beltran (70.3%) and Andruw Jones (66.2%) just fell short.
Buehrle received 45 votes to appear on 11.4% of ballots. It’s an increase in what’s been an up-and-down tenure on the ballot, with 44 votes in 2021, 23 votes in 2022, 42 votes in 2023, and 32 votes in 2024. He needs at least five percent of the overall vote to remain on the ballot for up to 10 years total, with four years of eligibility now left.
The former White Sox left-hander finished his career with a 214-160 career record and a 3.81 ERA. Buehrle was a five-time All-Star and threw 14 consecutive seasons with 200 or more innings pitched, falling just four outs short of extending that streak to 15 in his final season.
Buehrle will enter his sixth year on the ballot when the next round of voting opens this fall with continued hopes of a better outcome.
