UPDATE: The White Sox announce that Clevinger left his start with bicep soreness and will be further evaluated.
We will wait for official news, but based on some video, things don’t look good for Mike Clevinger right now. The right-hander left tonight’s start against the Dodgers early with an apparent injury to his throwing arm.
Clevinger’s injury came as he was just one pitch away from working out of a first-and-third, no-out jam in the fifth inning. After inducing pop-ups from Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, Clevinger was 0-2 on J.D. Martinez before throwing a 95 mph fastball that Martinez fouled off. Immediately after the pitch, Clevinger shook his arm around and was clearly in a lot of pain. He would not throw any warm-up pitches before leaving the game.
Clevinger has previously had Tommy John Surgery in his career, and earlier this year, he went on the Injured List with a wrist injury that occurred from throwing a different type of slider. On the season, Clevinger had been throwing pretty well recently. He lowered his ERA to 3.88 on the season in tonight’s game and has gone 3-4 with 53 strikeouts in 62.2 innings.
As the White Sox provide more information, we will continue to provide updates.
