Multiple pedestrians hit by vehicle outside Guaranteed Rate Field

by Joe Binder

UPDATE (9:31 p.m. CT): The Chicago White Sox released the following statement:

Four fans were injured this evening in a hit-and-run incident outside Guaranteed Rate Field prior to the start of tonight’s Chicago White Sox game. The injured were treated at the scene and transported to local hospitals, while the Illinois State Police and Chicago Police apprehended the suspect blocks away.

Our hearts go out to the four fans who were injured this evening, their families and friends, as well as the fans who witnessed the incident on their way to a baseball game. The Chicago White Sox organization expresses its appreciation to the Chicago Police Department, the Illinois State Police and others, including fans, who responded to the incident and provided immediate care for the victims.

Three people have been transported to local hospitals after a hit-and-run incident outside of Guaranteed Rate Field on Tuesday evening.

According to an update from the Chicago Fire Department, one person is in “very critical” condition with trauma, a second person is in serious-to-stable condition, and a third person is in stable condition. The known victims are believed to be a 51-year-old woman, a 25-year-old man, and a 24-year-old man, according to officials.

Chicago police told media that a driver was traveling eastbound on 35th Street at approximately 6:23 p.m. when he struck three people with a silver sedan. The fleeing driver was later apprehended on the Dan Ryan Expressway, and taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Illinois State Police have reportedly shut down the entrance ramps onto the Dan Ryan Expressway in the outbound lanes, and traffic backups are being reported up to 31st Street. Our Joe Ruffalo, who is at the game, reports that fans are being redirected away from 35th Street and toward Gate 5.

Charges against the driver are pending at this time, according to police.

As we get additional information, we’ll provide further updates. If you’re at the stadium, please use caution and patience.
