Orioles 5, White Sox 3: Fedde’s great start spoiled by shaky bullpen

by Patrick Hederman

The White Sox appeared to be in good shape to win Saturday’s game after Erick Fedde shoved 6.1 innings of shutout ball. However, the bullpen made sure that would not be possible by giving up a five in the 8th inning, leading the Orioles to a win.

All of the South Sider’s scoring came in the bottom of the 5th inning when Gavin Sheets hit a three-run triple off lefty reliever Keegan Akin, scoring Andrew Benintendi, Nicky Lopez, and Tommy Pham.

The three-run lead remained steady until Ryan O’Hearn, Anthony Santander, and Jordan Westburg all went deep in the top of the 8th inning giving the Orioles a 5-3 lead. That offensive explosion proved to be enough for Baltimore to steal the win from the White Sox.

W: Dillon Tate (2-0, 2.40 ERA) L: Michael Kopech (1-4, 4.18 ERA) S: Cionel Perez (1)

Pitching Recap

Notable Performances

Erick Fedde: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K

Erick Fedde has been a bright spot on a team that hasn’t had many this season. He’s been completely dominant at home this season, posting a 4-0 record and a 0.95 ERA in 6 games. He was more than good enough to earn a win today, but the bullpen did not allow that to happen. Fedde should be highly coveted by teams making a playoff push at this year’s trade deadline.

Gavin Sheets: 1-for-4, 3B, 3 RBI

While Sheets did not look great in every at bat today, he got it done when it mattered. His two-out three-run triple was all of the Sox‘s offense today, and he hit it off of a lefty. It was an extremely impressive swing that deserves some shine on a day where it should have been enough to win the game.

Nicky Lopez: 2-for-2, 1 R, 1 BB

Any time a player gets on base three times, it’s a good day. Nicky Lopez had a good day today. A single had Lopez on base for Gavin Sheets‘ triple proving that it’s much easier to score when guys are getting on base, and Nicky did his part today before being pinch-hit for in the 9th inning.

Next Game

Chicago looks to avoid the four-game sweep against the Orioles in another day game tomorrow at 1:10 p.m. The projected starters for the game are Kyle Bradish (0-0, 2.41 ERA) and Garrett Crochet (5-4, 3.75 ERA).
