An eye for an eye. That’s what we can call this 4-game set with the Brewers. The Sox swept Milwaukee on their home turf, but Milwaukee then preceded to sweep the Sox at Guranteed Rate Field. Tonight capped off the home and home series, as the Brewers pounded the Sox 8-3. This was one of those games that just made you want to face palm. For starters, Lindblom had his stuff. The first 5 White Sox batters were all set down via the strikeout, while offensively Christian Yelich recorded an inside-the-park homer due to an Eloy Jimenez fielding kerfuffle. To add insult to injury, the White Sox were once again less than three feet from a game tying homer, tonight off the bat of Zack Collins.
Overall, White Sox fans should be happy with the split. Yes, the offense and pitching both lacked tonight. Gonzalez probably stayed in the game a bit long as he lost his location, the bullpen was not what it usually is, the top-5 batters went 2-for-19 with 13 strikeouts. However, this team is young, and games like this are somewhat inevitable.
W: Josh Lindblom (1-0) | L: Gio Gonzalez (0-1)
Notable Performances
Leury Garcia: 2-for-3, HR, 3 RBI, 2B
All 3 White Sox runs came off the bat of Leury Legend this evening, as he had yet another solid game offensively for the Sox. With Tim Anderson having a few days left on his 10-Day Injured List time period (hip soreness) and Nick Madrigal dealing with a separated shoulder, the production of White Sox middle infielders has become a question mark. However, Leury has been the answer, as he is now batting an even .300 with 8 RBI’s and 3 homers; he’s now tied for the team lead in both categories.
Nomar Mazara: 1-for-2, R
Before leaving the game with a left foot contusion, Nomar Mazara had strung together a couple of nice AB’s. He broke Lindblom’s streak of 5 straight strikeouts to start the game with a base hit to right field. He then scored thanks to Leury Garcia’s 2-run homer. Per White Sox Twitter, Mazara appears to be ok. He is listed as day-to-day.
Moment of the Game
Tonight’s “Moment of the Game” came in the second inning when Leury Garcia hit his third homer of the season, putting the Sox up 2-0 early. To make this home run even sweeter, prior to Garcia’s at bat, Brewers starter Josh Lindblom had struck out the first 5 White Sox batters of the night, except Mazara who was on base with a single before the home run. Leury Garcia’s play as a utility man has been impressive this season — a great recovery from a rough Opening Day.
In addition, our very own Jordan Lazowski overcame the adversity tonight, and finally got back in the #SoxMath win column!
Player of the Game
Leury Garcia earns the honor of Player of the Game tonight, as he was a small light in a dark game for the White Sox. He started off the game well with a 2-run homer, and finished well with an RBI double in the top of the 9th. He is one of the hottest hitters in the White Sox lineup.
Looking Ahead
The White Sox will now get set to host the Cleveland Indians for a 4-game set at Guaranteed Rate field. The action starts tomorrow at 7:10 PM as Dylan Cease looks to build off his solid performance in Kansas City. The Indians have right-hander Aaron Civale slated to get the start. This is an important series for the White Sox. As of tonight, the Sox and Indians are in a tight battle for the second spot in the AL Central, as the Indians have a half-game advantage on the Sox.
