Postgame Report: Indians 5, White Sox 3

by Tim Moran

Reeling from a frustrating loss in game one of today’s doubleheader, the Chicago White Sox couldn’t pull it together in the nightcap either. The game saw another horrendous first inning from the starting pitcher, as Carlos Rodon gave up three runs, and the South Siders’ offense couldn’t stage a comeback. The Sox now fall to 1-4 on the year, with one more game vs. Cleveland tomorrow before a three-game stint in Kansas City.

W: Adam Plutko (1-0) | L: Carlos Rodon (0-1) | SV: Cam Hill (1)

Notable Performances

Jose Abreu: 3-for-4, 1 HR, 2 R

After a 1-for-5 outing in game one of the doubleheader, Abreu came back strong tonight, smashing a homer to center along with a double and single.

White Sox bullpen: 5.1 IP, 0 ER, 3 K, 1 BB

Chicago’s ‘pen continues to put up good performances behind the poor starting pitching, with Steve Cishek, Jimmy Lambert, Ian Hamilton, Evan Marshall, and Alex Colome holding the Indians scoreless (besides two runs charged to Rodon off Cishek).

Other Notables:

James McCann hit his second home run is as many starts behind the plate, Tim Anderson recorded another extra-base hit, and Luis Robert has a five-game hitting streak…through five games to start the year. For Cleveland, Plutko went six strong innings and Carlos Santana hit a two-run bomb.

Moment of the Game

Although McCann didn’t do much else, his homer in the second gave Chicago some hope early on.

Player of the Game

I’ll go with Jose Abreu here, as he was the only player from the road team to record a multi-hit game tonight. As much as the starting pitching has failed the Sox, this offense will need more Abreu-like performances to win games.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow at 6:10 pm CT, Chicago will wrap up their series with Cleveland. Lucas Giolito (0-1, 17.18 ERA) looks to improve on his poor Opening Day performance against Zac Plesac.

It’s time to use openers at the rate the startimg rotation is coughing up the 1st inning. That 1st imning ERA line minus Keuchel is so bad
