The White Sox only needed two runs tonight, as the pitching staff shut down what was a streaking Cleveland lineup entering the game. Chicago improves to 8-6, while Cleveland falls to 8-7. As a result, the White Sox move into sole possession of second place in the division.
W: Dylan Cease (2-1) | L: Aaron Civale (1-2) | SV: Alex Colome (4)
Notable Performances
Dylan Cease: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 4 K
Dylan Cease struggled with his fastball command, resulting in five walks. However, he was able to routinely work out of danger; despite the walks, not a single run crossed the plate while he was on the mound. All things considered, it was a more successful outing for Cease than his last start against Cleveland.
Danny Mendick: 2-for-3
Danny Mendick continued his hot streak, as he slapped a couple of singles off a tough starter and made a terrific diving play at second base. Mendick was the only Chicago player with multiple hits.
Adam Engel: 1-for-3, HR, RBI
Adam Engel homered in the bottom of the eighth, providing the game’s first run since the first inning and giving some extra breathing room to Alex Colome for his save opportunity.
Aaron Bummer: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
Aaron Bummer provided five outs in relief of Cease, but left the game in the middle of an at-bat due to soreness in bicep (throwing arm).
Moment of the Game
Cleveland had the bases loaded and nobody out in the second inning. Cease notched a strikeout, and then was the beneficiary of this tremendous double play turn by Yoan Moncada.
Player of the Game
Danny Mendick gets the nod tonight for his multi-hit effort and dazzling defense.
Looking Ahead
Chicago and Cleveland will meet again shortly, as tomorrow’s first pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM CT. Zach Plesac will start against an unannounced pitcher for the White Sox. It is believed that tomorrow will be a bullpen game for Chicago.
