A wild back-and-forth ballgame ends up aces for the South Siders.
The White Sox put across the first four runs of the game, highlighted by a Luis Robert RBI 2B and Yoan Moncada HR. Lucas Giolito was awesome in this effort, giving up just two runs across seven innings of work, and left with a 4-2 lead. However, some late runs by the Rays in the eighth, given up by Craig Kimbrel and Aaron Bummer, necessitated extra innings for the White Sox (thanks, of course, to Tim Anderson’s game-tying homer in the top of the ninth). After shutout work from Garrett Crochet and Liam Hendriks, the White Sox tacked on two runs in the top of the 11th (Anderson RBI 1B, Abreu RBI GO), and Ryan Tepera closed it down in the 11th for a White Sox winner.
With the win, the White Sox improved to 72-51 on the season.
W: Liam Hendriks (8-3) | L: Andrew Kittredge (8-2) | S: Ryan Tepera (2)
Savant Leaders
Notable Performances
Lucas Giolito: 7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 24 Swinging Strikes
For all his inconsistencies this season, Giolito has saved some of his best performances of the season for likely playoff teams. Giolito went seven strong in this one and had command of all his pitches en route to what looked like a win in the scorebook for him. Alas, I think he’ll take the team win instead.
Tim Anderson: 3-for-6, HR, 2 RBI, 4 R, 2 K
Anderson had an incredible day at the plate today, saving the White Sox in the ninth with a game-tying homer and the lead with a go-ahead single to score Zack Collins in the 11th. Anderson is now hitting .303 on the season with his OPS creeping ever closer to .800 (currently .790). His at-bats in both the 9th and 11th were excellent and put the Sox in a prime position to win.
Yoan Moncada: 1-for-3, HR, R, 2 RBI, BB, K
Yoan Moncada continued his seven-game hitting streak today and found himself on base a couple of times in the effort. This homer was his 11th of the season, and with the hitting streak, hopefully, returns to form soon.
Other Notable Performances
Luis Robert: 2-for-6, 2B, RBI
Jose Abreu: 1-for-6, 2 RBI, R, 3 K
