Early on in this second game of the series, it looked like we’d be seeing a repeat of last night’s pitching duel. Cease was cruising through three innings, but ran into some control issues in the 4th and 5th. Gerrit Cole also had spotty command, at least by his standards, with three walks to go along with seven strikeouts. Foster came in to relieve Cease in the 5th and gave up a two-run single to none other than Gleyber Torres. Besides some woes on the mound, main theme of the Sox offense this game was double plays, as they grounded into four of them.
The White Sox fall to 26-18 after losing back-to-back games to start the series.
W: Gerrit Cole (6-2) | L: Dylan Cease (2-1)
Savant Leaders
Notable Performances
Dylan Cease: 4.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 6 K
As mentioned above, Cease was out-pitching Cole in the first three innings. He lost control in the fourth and could not find it in the fifth either. On the bright side, he had 20 swings and misses today, as well as only 3 hard hit balls given up.
Tim Anderson: 1-for-3, BB
Timmy snapped his hitless streak with a base hit in the sixth inning, as well as walking to lead off the game. He also made some very good plays at shortstop.
Nick Madrigal: 2-for-3, 3B
Nicky two-strikes struck again. After 10 pitches, Madrigal hit a stand-up triple to left-center in the eight inning. He also recorded a hit against Gerrit Cole in his first at-bat.
Matchup of the Game
This is where I believe the game got out of reach for the South Siders today. Cease was taken out and replaced with Matt Foster with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth. Gleyber continued to kill the Sox in this series by tacking on two with a single here, making the game 5-0.
Next Game
