Rays 12, White Sox 3: No-hitter turns into unprecedented collapse

by Joe Binder

Ever wonder what rock bottom feels like? If we aren’t here, we are certainly getting close.

The White Sox entered the seventh inning with a 3-0 lead and Lance Lynn throwing a no-hitter. They were nine outs away from ending a nine-game losing streak that has all but completely ended their season before the end of April. Fast-forward to the seventh inning and the Rays scored 10 runs while the remaining fans in attendance began their “sell the team” chants once again.

There isn’t much else to say about this one that can’t be seen in the final score. The White Sox turned a very winnable game into a historic collapse.

In further news, Luis Robert Jr. was in fact pulled from the game by Pedro Grifol for his lack of hustle in the first inning, but according to Robert, he had some hamstring tightness … that he told no one about before the game.

With the loss, the White Sox fall to 7-21 and reach see their losing streak hit double digits.

W: Yonny Chirinos (1-0, 0.64 ERA) | L: Lance Lynn (0-4, 7.16 ERA)

White Sox Scoring Recap:

  • Bottom 2nd: Elvis Andrus singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jose Siri. Eloy Jimenez scores. Jake Burger scores. Yasmani Grandal to 2nd. TB 0, CWS 2

Notable Performances

Lance Lynn: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 10 K

Don’t let his final line fool you, Lynn was much better than what the numbers indicate. Bummer certainly didn’t do him any favors in relief.

Elvis Andrus (SS): 1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI

Andrus provided the main run support to give Lynn a two-run cushion for much of his outing.

Next Game

The White Sox will try to avoid yet another sweep on Sunday. Mike Clevinger (2-2, 4.81 ERA) is slated to take the bump against righty Drew Rasmussen (3-2, 3.33 ERA).

First pitch will be at 1:10 PM CT over on NBC Sports Chicago.

Wow what a terrible team. I wish I got paid millions of dollars a year to be an absolute failure. I wonder how many minor league teams would embarrass the White Sox as well?
