Report: White Sox reach out to Ron Washington for manager job

In recent days, we’ve heard that Bruce Bochy, Ron Washington, and Mike Shildt are among the leading candidates for the White Sox’ managerial opening. Today, it’s been confirmed that at least one of these three has actually been contacted by the club.

After it was reported this morning that Joe Espada will interview with the White Sox today, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago, Ron Washington has already been contacted by the White Sox for their managerial opening.

This brings the list of confirmed managerial candidates up to four: Miguel Cairo, Pedro Grifoli, Espada, and Washington. While Bochy, Shildt, and others have all been rumored, there have not been official reports to confirm any have gotten an interview or will get an interview.

Washington has been with the Braves for their past few postseason runs and has managed in the World Series several times as the manager of the Texas Rangers from 2007-2014. His specialty is defense, and the White Sox would no doubt benefit from his knowledge and expertise, given that they were a bottom-five organization in terms of defensive metrics last season. He’s also been known as a coach that players enjoy playing for, and he could certainly bring a missing spark to this organization. However, at age 70, there’s no guarantee that Washington will want to return as a manager and may instead opt to remain as the Braves’ third base coach.
