Report: White Sox could start trading their players this week

by Joe Binder

It might not be long until we see trades happening on the South Side.

MLB insider Jon Heyman told 670 The Score’s Mully and Haugh Show on Monday morning that the White Sox could begin selling as soon as this week. Heyman also added that all but four players are likely to be made available to potential buyers.

“What I’m gathering from other sources around the league is that they’re open – not saying they will trade them – open to trading almost everybody with the exception of a few players, those players being (Dylan) Cease, (Luis) Robert, (Andrew) Vaughn and (Eloy) Jimenez. So, basically four players that they don’t want to trade. Does that mean that they wouldn’t consider it or wouldn’t listen to offers? I’m not sure about that. But I expect those four players to stay and anyone else could be dealt.”

Heyman published an article with the New York Post later in the day to elaborate further on his comments, saying Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, and Keynan Middleton were the most likely to go given their impending free agent status. Giolito in particular, was noted as being expected to draw interest from the Reds, Rangers, Dodgers, and others.

This latest update comes after continued reports from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, which suggest a similar outcome. In fact, the columnist recently shared on the White Sox Talk Podcast that he expects Lucas Giolito, Kendall Graveman, Joe Kelly, Lance Lynn, Aaron Bummer, and Mike Clevinger to be the most likely players on the move.

In suggesting 60% of the White Sox’s starting rotation could be traded, Nightengale claims that the White Sox could take advantage of a market without many starting pitching options at the Trade Deadline. He also has heard that other MLB General Managers “love” Lance Lynn, believing he would be a different pitcher on a different team.

“I know he hasn’t, you know, he doesn’t have a good ERA. Hasn’t performed well. But they think – get him out of Chicago, get him in our hands, pitch lights out.”

Though the White Sox (38-54) are currently eight games back of the first-place Guardians (45-45) in the AL Central, they haven’t been able to gain any traction and have fallen further back, if anything. With this first wave of the rebuild essentially now a failure, choosing this direction would mean the White Sox have a lot of work to do heading into 2024 and beyond to salvage what they can out of the remaining core.

Great! I hope they trade all 25 players on their roster. Don’t stop there. Trade all the coaches, managers, front office people, too. As long as we can’t get rid of ownership.

The above says that the White Sox haven’t been able to gain any traction! At one point they had gotten to within 3.5 of first, only to backslide! We saw this last year as well! Every time it seemed they had made it to the top of the hill, they rolled back. It’s clear that this team has given up, and that every player on this team wants out. Who could blame them, given the current ownership and front office?
