Report: White Sox DFA veteran catcher Martin Maldonado

by Joe Binder

The White Sox roster moves continue ahead of the second half.

According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Chandler Rome, the organization has designated veteran catcher Martin Maldonado for assignment. The Sox have yet to make this move official, but will likely do so as early as Thursday morning.

Though not known for his hitting, Maldonado put together his worst season at the dish. The 37-year-old slashed a mere .119/.174/.230 with four homers, 17 RBI, and a -1.5 fWAR in 147 plate appearances. Given his abysmal performance, the former Houston Astro will most likely pass through waivers unclaimed and have the option to elect free agency.

While some fans would like to see top-catching prospect Edgar Quero fill the open role, it’s highly unlikely as the 21-year-old was just promoted to Triple-A Charlotte earlier this month. A second promotion to the majors after just six games in the Queen City would be fairly aggressive, despite slashing .273/.385/.455 with two extra-base hits in that span.

This leaves Chuckie Robinson as the leading candidate. In fact, since this article was originally published, the Sun Times’ Daryl Van Schouwen has reported that the 29-year-old is on his way to Chicago.

Robinson last appeared in the majors for Cincinnati in 2022, where he played in just 25 games. Though he won’t bring much to the table, the Danville product provides the White Sox with a stopgap option to serve behind Lee until Quero is ready to make the permanent leap.
