A second source is now confirming news we heard earlier this week.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, multiple sources within the baseball industry have said that the White Sox are likely to promote from within to find their next head of baseball operations. While this report did not specify who it would be, when paired with Bob Nightengale’s previous reports, it’s pretty easy to figure out that it would be Chris Getz in this case.
Rumors have been swirling that the White Sox could make this announcement official as early as later this week – especially if they are in fact planning to promote Getz.
Getz, 39, is currently in his seventh season overseeing the White Sox Minor League Operations and Player Development System and third as Assistant General Manager. Before his promotion in January 2021, Getz served as Director of Player Development from 2017-20 after being hired by the Sox in October 2016. As of last week, Getz was considered the “leading candidate” to become the next GM of the White Sox, so this report doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise.
Before his days in the White Sox front office, Getz was selected by the team in the fourth round of the 2005 draft, and he made his major league debut late in 2008. After a rather lackluster professional career, Getz spent 2015-16 as a Baseball Operations Assistant/Player Development with the Kansas City Royals, who won the 2015 World Series.
Recent rumors are that Dayton Moore, former President of Baseball Operations for the Royals, would eventually be joining the organization as well. However, those rumors, for now, appear to have quieted. That could still change, however, and any moves such as that would likely be announced at Getz’s press conference.
The idea of having one lead decision-maker is an appealing one; however, the choice to fill the role with Getz would be a lackluster one for the organization. Getz would have plenty of time to prove the doubters wrong – however, the organization hasn’t earned much benefit of the doubt at current.
Should this decision become official, we will continue to provide updates.

Riensdorf is a freaking idiot.
If Reinsdorf promotes from within, that will mean that the firing of Williams and Hahn was just window dressing! Can anyone from the inside be expected to clean up this mess?
Having one person handle the former responsibilities of Hahn and Williams provides a much clearer picture of who is responsible for decision making! It wasn’t clear who was calling the shots before! However, promoting from within shows the insular nature of the team! Is an insider the ideal choice for cleaning up this mess?
