Depth remains the priority for the White Sox this offseason. They signed another one of those pieces today.
According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the White Sox have signed veteran right-hander Jake Woodford to a minor-league deal. This includes an invite to Major League Spring Training.
Woodford, 27, is a former third-round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals who made his debut with the club in 2020. Throughout four seasons, Woodford has posted a 4.29 ERA, 15.1 K%, and 8.0 BB%. The right-hander threw seven different pitches throughout the 2023 season, primarily a sinker, sweeper, curveball, and fastball – while also mixing a cutter, changeup, and slider into the mix. A groundball-first pitcher, Woodford posted a 51.2 GB% last season, placing him in the 85th percentile in that regard. This goes along with some of the White Sox’ other acquisitions this offseason as pitch-to-contact, high-ground-ball rate pitchers.
This move is a clear-depth piece and is likely one of many Non-Roster Invites that will be signed in the coming weeks before Spring Training.
