Spring Training Report: Gio Sharp as White Sox Fall 1-0 in 7

by Jordan Lazowski

Lucas Giolito took the hill for the second time this Spring, opposite German Marquez. Lucas Giolito looked every bit of the ace that he is in three innings, but the offense was held to just four hits in a 1-0 loss.

W: Ryan Rolison (1-0) L: Kade McClure (0-1) S: Diehl (1)

Position Players

Tim Anderson (Single), Leury Garcia (Single), Yoan Moncada (Double), and Zack Collins (Single) were the White Sox’ entire offense this afternoon, as German Marquez, Ryan Rolison, Tyler Kinley, and Phillip Diehl were pretty impressive this afternoon for the Rockies.

Andrew Vaughn, Eloy Jimenez, Jose Abreu, and Yermin Mercedes were among those who saw the field today.

Pitchers

For as good as the Rockies’ pitching staff was, the White Sox were arguably better, allowing just one unearned run through 7 innings. Both hits given up by the White Sox this afternoon came after the first (and only) run of the game was scored. Lucas Giolito threw three innings and was followed by Evan Marshall, Jimmy Cordero, Kade McClure, and Tyler Johnson. McClure, who pitched well, was on the hook for the loss after a tough error in the sixth.

Talking about “stuff”: Giolito’s stuff looked awesome today, and Kade McClure continued to impress despite the results. If he has a good start to the season, look for McClure’s name to be one explored during mid-season trade discussions.
