The White Sox fell to 1-6-3 in Cactus League play this afternoon, losing to the Padres 4-2. Michael Kopech, Lance Lynn, and Garrett Crochet all saw action, but an offense without many regulars couldn’t hold up.
A friendly reminder that these are Spring Training games. The White Sox have the benefit of being in a position to test the strength of their depth. The team ran out a bunch of minor league pitchers against the World Series Champions yesterday and got shellacked, exactly as you would expect. Trust the process that’s been put in place. Spring Training is about getting ready for the regular season; there haven’t been too many games yet where the Sox’ pitching and offense have both featured regulars.
For context: the 2005 White Sox were 14-18 in Spring Training, good for 13th in the AL. Spring Training W-L results don’t dictate too much when it’s all said and done.
W: Drew Pomeranz (1-0) L: Jimmy Cordero (0-1) S: Miguel Diaz (2)
Position Players
Andrew Vaughn and Yermin Mercedes provided the brief glimmer of offense in the fourth inning this afternoon. At the same time, with so few regulars in the lineup, these results are pretty expected at this point in the Spring.
Adam Engel, Danny Mendick, and Matt Reynolds also turned in hits this afternoon. When it was all said and done, though, two runs and give hits were not enough this afternoon.
Pitchers
The fans were treated to some great pitchers this afternoon, as Lance Lynn, Michael Kopech, and Garrett Crochet all pitched in today’s game. Lynn and Crochet both had positive moments and worked around walks, while Michael Kopech fired off a perfect 1-2-3 inning, touching 98 mph on the radar gun.
Jimmy Cordero, Kodi Medieros, Tyler Johnson, and Alex McRae were among those who also saw action on the mound today. Cordero struggled, giving up two runs, while McRae looked pretty good in relief. The nine total walks for the Sox weren’t great, but hey, it’s Spring Training.
