Spring Training Report: Lucas Giolito Solid as White Sox fall 4-3 on Saint Patrick’s Day

by Sox On 35th Contributors

Lucas Giolito got the start today in Glendale in the White Sox 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Down 4-1 going into the 9th, the Sox made a valiant effort for a comeback but fell short, as Billy Hamilton popped out with the bases loaded. With the loss, the White Sox fell to 4-9-4 on the Spring.

W: Walker Buehler (1-1) L: Lucas Giolito (0-1); S: Enny Romero (2)

Position Players

The White Sox totaled 8 hits today at Camelback Ranch. The Sox struck first in the first inning when Leury Garcia scored on a throwing error by Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes after a Walker Buehler wild pitch. Matt Reynolds provided the only homer in the 9th inning which sparked a rally of sorts, giving the Sox a chance to tie or take the win. Tim Anderson added a hit today, as did Abreu, Garcia, Eaton, Lucroy, and Yermin Mercedes.

Pitchers

Lucas Giolito had a solid outing today in his start. He pitched 3.2 innings allowing 2 ER on 3 hits, along with 2 BB and 6 Ks. He lost his control a bit at times and surrendered a home run to Will Smith, but overall, another solid outing from the White Sox’ Opening Day starter.

Evan Marshall threw a third of an inning and Liam Hendriks pitched a clean inning with 1 strikeout. Aaron Bummer came in and nailed down the 6th, striking out the side. As you can see below, he looked absolutely nasty.

Things unraveled from there, as Jose Ruiz pitched an inning and a third, allowing 2 ER and striking out 3. Connor Sadzeck closed it out for the Sox in the final 1.2 innings, allowing 1 hit, no runs, to go along with 2 strikeouts.
