Spring Training Report: White Sox Lose Late Lead, Fall to Rangers 3-2

by Sox On 35th Contributors

Lucas Giolito was in ace form this afternoon, completing four shutout innings. However, Tyler Johnson had a rough 8th inning, surrendering three runs that would be the difference in this 3-2 ballgame. The White Sox fell to 1-8-3 with today’s loss.

Position Players

A duo of big bats with no major league experience boosted the Sox offense on Friday, as Andrew Vaughn and Jake Burger each added two hits. Burger was arguably the player of the game, contributing a double as well as a 2-out RBI. Despite an overall tough day at the plate, Micker Adolfo was also able to contribute an RBI. Zack Collins also turned in a 1-for-2 effort with a walk.

Pitchers

Lucas Giolito’s dominant spring momentum carried into Friday, where he tossed four innings of shutout baseball to go along with four strikeouts. After three appearances, Giolito is currently tied for the most innings in spring training with nine thus far, in addition to a 1.00 earned run average, which is currently tied for fifth best.

Liam Hendriks followed Giolito and did Liam Hendriks things. He tossed a spotless inning and added a strikeout. His ERA for this spring currently still sits at 0.00.

Garrett Crochet was the next man up and he not only carried on what Giolito and Hendriks started, but one-upping Hendricks in the process with two strikeouts in his lone shutout inning.

Zack Burdi showed some perseverance after a shaky start to his day. After surrendering back-to-back one out doubles and a walk, Burdi was ultimately able to strand the bases loaded after inducing an inning-ending fly-out to Danny Mendick. However, as we mentioned before, the lead did not hold, as between Tyler Johnson and Bennett Sousa, the White Sox could not hold a late lead.
