Spring Training Report: White Sox offense backs up Dylan Cease in 6-2 win

by Joe Binder

While it wasn’t his cleanest outing, Dylan Cease battled through 3.2 innings of work to keep the Cleveland Indians off the board. The offense gave him plenty of early run support also, scoring four times in the first inning and twice more in the second to build a lead that would last. With the win, the Sox improve to 6-10-4 on the spring.

Position Players

Eloy Jimenez, who made a nice run-saving catch later in the game, led the first inning charge with a two-run double that almost cleared the left-center fence. Yasmani Grandal and Zack Collins immediately followed, each with their own RBI singles to help put up the big crooked number to start the game.

Looking through the box score, it’s worth mentioning that Yoan Moncada raised his average to .313 with a 2-for-3 performance. Infielder Marco Hernandez also had himself a day, capturing one of the team’s four doubles in a multi-hit effort.

Pitchers

Dylan Cease started this game and saw his lack of command create some jams. His three walks and two plunked batters definitely jump out on the stat line, but so do his three strikeouts. The righty managed to use his fastball and off-speed to get some whiffs and escape any damage. After the game, Cease said he was happy with his slider and felt much better than his final line looked, though his curveball was a point of struggle.

The bullpen went on to hold things down for the most part. Jose Ruiz and Conor Sadzeck each gave up a run in the eight and ninth innings respectively, but the lead was too great for Cleveland to put in jeopardy.
