Tale of the Tape: A’s 7, White Sox 0

by Jordan Lazowski

After taking three of four in Detroit and two of three in Philadelphia, the White Sox were stymied by veteran Mike Fiers in a 4-0 Friday afternoon defeat. On the bright side, they showed Field of Dreams on the field after the game in celebration of the August 13, 2020, game between the White Sox and Yankees in Iowa.

W: Mike Fiers (11-3) L: Ross Detwiler (1-3)

The Good

Tim Anderson: 2-3 (16-for-35 in August)

Leury Garcia: 1-for-4

James McCann: 1-for-3

The Bad

Everyone Else: Garcia, McCann, and Anderson combined for the only four hits the Sox could muster

Moment that Mattered

Well, in a loss, it’s hard to pick the White Sox for this one. But hey, Leury made a nice play at 2B, so let’s give him the moment here.

Stats On 35th – Lets Break this one down By the Numbers

Today’s Numbers:

9.8, 5,48,19,0.353

9.8

In what was a pretty disappointing game, Jose Ruiz’s scoreless 1.2 innings out of the pen resulted in him being today’s MVP in terms of Win Probability Added (WPA). Only Ruiz (9.8%) and Anderson (8.3%) added positive percentage points towards the Sox’ chances of winning.

5

To say the White Sox have struggled against the A’s this season is an understatement. After being shut down by Mike Fiers for the second time this season, the White Sox are now 0-4 against the A’s this season, scoring a measly five runs in those four games.

48

In honor of the announcement that the White Sox and Yankees would be playing where Field of Dreams was shot, the 1989 White Sox – the year the movie came out – beat the A’s 3-2 on this day. Carlton Fisk, who was 3-for-6 on the day, drove home the winning run in the 11th to give the Sox their 48th win on the season.

19

After his 1-for-4 showing today, Leury Garcia extended his on-base streak to 19 games.

0.353

The White Sox are not new to blowout losses this season. In fact, in games considered “blowouts” (either winning or losing by 5+ runs), the White Sox are 12-22 on the season (0.353). This partially explains their incredibly high negative run differential on the season.

Next Game: Return of the King

Probables: “Rey”naldo Lopez (6-9, 5.41 ERA) vs. Tanner Roark (7-7, 4.14 ERA), 6:10 PM CT

Player of the Game

Well, this is going to be a tough one. But, hey, we gotta stay true to brand. Who was the best in a lot of rough performances today?
