Tigers 7, White Sox 2: Rough night for offense, pitching

by Sox On 35th Contributors

Sox opened a four-game set with the Detroit Tigers today and dropped the first in pretty unspectacular fashion. Walks absolutely killed the White Sox today in this one – the club’s pitching has been superb as of late, but tonight they issued 11 walks.

Lucas Giolito took the mound for the Sox today, and he did not have his best stuff. He surrendered seven walks in 3.2 innings of work and allowed four runs. He handed the ball off the bullpen, where Gregory Santos, Garrett Crochet, and Aaron Bummer combined for 4.1 innings of work in relief. Both Crochet and Bummer struggled, turning a 4-2 ballgame into a 7-2 blowout by the time it was all said and done.

The White Sox only mustered two runs today. Tim Anderson singled home Jake Burger, and Gavin Sheets hit a solo shot in the fifth. But, there wasn’t much else to talk about with an offense that could only muster four hits.

With the loss, the White Sox fall to 21-31.

W: Alex Faedo (1-2) | L: Lucas Giolito (3-4)

White Sox Scoring Recap

  • Top 3rd: Tim Anderson singles scoring Jake Burger. 1-0 White Sox.
  • Top 5th: Gavin Sheets homers (7) to right field. 4-2 Tigers.

Notable Performances

Lucas Giolito: 3.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 7 BB, 4 K

The seven walks were an oddity for Giolito – easily a career-high. He had posted the best walk rate of his career thus far before tonight’s outing, so it happened to be just one of those off nights.
