Tim Anderson to miss 2-4 weeks with sprained left knee

by Joe Binder

The White Sox will be without their shortstop for the new few weeks.

The team confirmed late-night rumors by revealing that Tim Anderson has suffered a sprained left knee. He has been placed on the 10-day injured list and is expected to miss 2-4 weeks. As part of the corresponding roster move, the team recalled infielder Lenyn Sosa from Triple-A Charlotte.

The injury is believed to have occurred on a play that looked to be a routine double-play grounder. However, third baseman Hanser Alberto hesitated before making the throw, and second baseman Elvis Andrus in turn tried to catch the runner in between the bases. Anderson was shaken up after being turned around on the throw but would remain in the game at the time before being removed a few innings later.

Anderson had gotten off to a solid start both at the plate and in the field, hitting .298 and having yet to make an error at shortstop. The team’s sparkplug now joins Eloy Jimenez (hamstring), Joe Kelly (groin), Matt Foster (forearm), Garrett Crochet (Tommy John), and Liam Hendriks (Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma) on the White Sox injured list.

Sosa, 23, is 13-for-29 (.448) with five doubles, two home runs, eight RBI, seven walks, six runs scored, and a 1.384 OPS over nine games with Triple-A Charlotte this season. He ranks among the International League leaders in on-base percentage (1st, .556), OPS (2nd), doubles (2nd), extra-base hits (2nd, 7), average (3rd), slugging percentage (3rd, .828), hits (4th) and total bases (4th, 24). Sosa entered 2023 ranked by MLB.com as the No. 8 prospect and by Baseball America as the No. 10 prospect in the Sox organization.

Sosa spent most of 2022 in Chicago’s minor-league system, combining to hit .313/.369/.511 (152-483) with 22 doubles, 23 homers, 79 RBI, 39 walks, and 77 runs scored in 119 games between Double-A Birmingham and Charlotte. He also appeared in 11 games with the White Sox, and made his major-league debut on June 23.

I can’t believe the same players are injured all the time. I think the Sox should be looking at upgrading their trainers. Also focus on their off season training methods. Get these guys stretched out so they can minimize the sprains and strains. Again it’s always the same guys ,Anderson ,Moncada ,Jimenez and Roberts.

I don’t follow all MLB teams but have to believe the Sox injuries are by far in the top two or three in the league. It’s always the same guys; Jimenez, Anderson, Moncoda, Grandal and Robert. I guess 2 out of 5 ain’t bad…..just a question of when will those other 2 go down ?
