Today in White Sox History: May 22nd

by Joe Binder

On this date in 1938, one of the greatest pitchers in White Sox franchise history reached a huge milestone. Ted Lyons earned his 200th career victory when Chicago beat the Washington Senators 9-2.

In the game, Lyons threw a full nine innings in front of the Comiskey faithful. He surrendered two earned on nine hits while striking out three. Also, to no surprise, this game fell on a Sunday since the right-hander was known for only throwing once a week on the Sabbath

By the end of his career, Lyons finished with a 260-230 record after 21 seasons on the South Side. “Sunday Teddy” was later inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955 and saw his jersey number, 16, retired by the Sox a year after his death in 1987.

To this day, Lyons still leads all White Sox pitchers with his 260 victories. Behind him are Red Faber with 254, Ed Walsh with 195, and Billy Pierce with 186.
