Tony La Russa will reportedly not return to White Sox in 2023

by Jordan Lazowski

As the season comes closer to an end, more rumors continue to swirl surrounding Tony La Russa and his status for 2023. Today, reports have circulated that indicate La Russa may have managed his last game for the South Siders.

According to Dan Bernstein, who is a radio host for Chicago’s 670 The Score, La Russa will not return to the White Sox in 2023 as manager. While many have speculated La Russa would be moved to the front office in some capacity, it appears that, due to ongoing health concerns, La Russa may not be involved in any capacity with the White Sox moving forward.

This comes on the heels of a report by Mike Rodriguez, who stated a similar report to Bernstein’s.

La Russa’s status has long been a focal point for this team, and the 77-year-old last managed on August 28 in a 3-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has since undergone various medical tests to address a heart condition. Though he’s been rumored to return by multiple insiders over the past several weeks, the club announced last week that the Hall of Famer will err on the side of caution moving forward and would not return to the team in 2022.

However, this most recent rumor is new news, as La Russa is in just the second year of a three-year contract with the team. With the club set to miss the postseason, the club was reportedly very split on whether or not to bring La Russa back into the fold in 2023. One potential name that has been floated recently by Bob Nightengale is Bruce Bochy, who was rumored to be one of the main candidates for the job back before La Russa was hired.

As the team’s interim manager, Miguel Cairo has led the White Sox to a 13-11 record. Despite getting out to a hot streak, the team enters Tuesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins having lost six straight games, including three to the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians.

As more information becomes available on La Russa’s status, we will provide additional updates.

So far, all I see is speculation with no word from the mouth of a horse.
