White Sox 2, Guardians 0: Cueto Shuts Down Cleveland

by Sox On 35th Contributors

After a three-hour rain delay, the White Sox and Guardians were finally able to get underway. On a wet night in Cleveland, Johnny Cueto was absolutely brilliant, and the White Sox moved to just two and a half games back of the Guardians in the AL Central, setting the stage for tomorrow’s series finale.

The White Sox offense only pushed across two runs, but it was more than enough in today’s game. Jose Abreu hit an RBI double in the sixth inning, and in the seventh, Elvis Andrus made an incredibly smart baserunning play on a sacrifice fly by Josh Harrison, pushing the lead to two runs.

From there, Johnny Cueto took care of business. This is becoming a broken record, but Cueto has been huge for this team. He once again took a game into the late innings, coming just one out away from a complete game shutout. After giving up just five hits in 8.2 innings, he would hand that game off to Liam Hendriks for a one-out save.

The bad news in this one: Yasmani Grandal left the game with what looked to be a pretty serious knee injury. He needs to undergo further evaluation, but in the meantime, Tony La Russa announced the White Sox would call up Carlos Perez from AAA Charlotte to take Grandal’s spot.

With the win, the White Sox improved to 62-59

W: Johnny Cueto (6-5) | L: Shane Bieber (8-7) | S: Liam Hendriks (28)
