For the first time in a while, the White Sox were the beneficiaries of players playing out of position.
Down 3-2 with just one out remaining, the South Siders used two crucial errors by Guardians’ third baseman Brayan Rocchio to remain in the game and take the lead via an Elvis Andrus RBI single. Jimmy Lambert would close out the game in the bottom of the ninth for his first save of the season and a White Sox series winner.
Jesse Scholtens got the start for the White Sox today, giving up just three runs in six innings of work – all three runs coming in the fifth inning with some loud contact. Outside of that, he more than did his job on the afternoon, putting the White Sox in a position to stay close late in the game and eventually sneak one out thanks to some spotty Cleveland defense. Lane Ramsey would make his major league debut in this game, retiring all four hitters he faced on just nine pitches before turning the ball over to Sammy Peralta to get two outs of his own.
On the offense, Luis Robert – per usual – did the damage early with an RBI triple. Eloy Jimenez’s sacrifice fly gave the team a 2-0 lead, and from there, the team wouldn’t score again until they pushed across three against Clase.
With the victory, the White Sox finish the season 8-5 against the Guardians. So there’s a mini-victory.
W: Sammy Peralta (1-0) | L: Emmanuel Clase (1-6) | S: Jimmy Lambert (1)
