White Sox 8, Athletics 7: Offense refuses to be swept

by Nicole Reitz

After painfully losing their last two games to the worst team in baseball, the White Sox finally found their rhythm and successfully avoided being swept in Oakland.

On the mound, Touki Toussaint got the rotation spot in place of Michael Kopech who was placed on the 15-day injured list earlier today. Toussaint threw three innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs. He ran into a wall in the bottom of the third inning, allowing two to score. With bases loaded and the lead run at the plate, Toussaint got out of the jam when Tim Anderson knocked down a grounder at shortstop for the final out.

Aaron Bummer came in for relief of Toussaint in the fourth inning and allowed another run to come across the plate. Straight off the plane from Triple-A Charlotte, Bryan Shaw made his appearance with the Sox in the eighth inning but gave up two more runs. In the ninth, Gregory Santos nearly blew the game, when he allowed two more runs but he was able to pull off the save.

As for the offense, the bats had a huge third inning, scoring five runs on five singles. Tim Anderson kicked things off hitting a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Zeby Zavala. Eloy Jimenez turned around and singled to center field scoring Andrew Benintendi. With bases loaded, Gavin Sheets was hit by a pitch and Jimenez came on in. With two outs, Zach Remillard singled bringing in an additional two runs.

The hot offense continued into the sixth inning when Zach Remillard doubled and reached third on an error. Andrew Benintendi’s sacrifice fly brought him home. Eloy Jimenez continued his incredible weekend by singling Tim Anderson in to extend the lead.

And to add one more insurance run in the seventh inning, Jake Burger smashed a solo home run to deep left-center field.

With the win, the Sox are 37-49 on the season.

W: Aaron Bummer (3-1) | L: Paul Blackburn (1-1) | S: Gregory Santos

Notable Performances

Tim Anderson: 2-for-4, R, RBI

For once, Tim Anderson had a pretty decent day at the plate. With a single, stolen base, sacrifice fly, and RBI, hopefully, this means his momentum is starting to come back.

Eloy Jimenez: 2-for-4, R, 2 RBI

After going 2-for-3 yesterday with a home run, Eloy Jimenez continued to shine at the plate today, putting up two RBIs.

Zach Remillard: 2-for-4, R

The wheels on Zach Remillard made a difference in the sixth inning when he advanced to third on a double paired with an error. A sacrifice fly from Andrew Benintendi brought him home, advancing the lead.

Jake Burger: 2-for-4, HR, 2 R, RBI

Jake Burger hit his 18th home run of the year deep into left-center field to give the Sox an insurance run in the seventh inning.
