Chris Getz stated at the Winter Meetings that the White Sox needed veteran catching depth. It appears they now have it.
The White Sox have acquired catcher Matt Thaiss from the Cubs in exchange for cash considerations, the team announced in a release on Tuesday evening.
Thaiss, 29, spent all of 2024 with the Angels, where he hit .204/.323/.299 with an 83 wRC+, -0.2 fWAR, two home runs and 16 RBI over 57 games. The Cubs previously acquired him from Los Angeles in exchange for cash considerations less than a month ago on November 20.
Originally selected 16th overall by the Angels in the 2016 MLB Draft out of the University of Virginia, Thaiss has spent his entire career in Anaheim up until this offseason. He is a career .208/.313/.342 hitter with 23 doubles, 22 homers, and 79 RBI in 245 games over six major league seasons. He has spent the majority of his time behind the plate (142 games), though also has appearances at third base (47), first base (31), second base (one), and left field (one).
The White Sox will have no shortage of catchers entering the 2025 campaign. With Korey Lee a lock for the major league roster, it’s likely Thaiss splits time with him behind the plate until the team decides to promote one of their catching prospects, either Edgar Quero or the newly acquired Kyle Teel.
Following the trade, the White Sox have a full 40-man roster.
