With MLB’s Spring Breakout returning for its second straight season, the Chicago White Sox have officially announced the roster of prospects they will be highlighting in their exhibition game later this month.
Last year, the White Sox were slated to face off against the Chicago Cubs in the MLB’s inaugural Spring Breakout, but the game was canceled due to inclement weather conditions. This year, the Sox are scheduled to face off against the Colorado Rockies’ collection of prospects on March 16.
The event will consist of 16 exhibition games across four days from March 13-16. Each team has put together its own roster of players in their minor league system and will play one exhibition game (except for the Cubs and Washington Nationals, who are each scheduled to play two games).
The White Sox roster is headlined by all six of the prospects that represent them in MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects list: Noah Schultz, Hagen Smith, Kyle Teel, Colson Montgomery, Braden Montgomery, and Edgar Quero.
On the mound, Schultz and Smith will be joined by Sean Burke, who is currently competing to open the season in the White Sox rotation. Other notable pitching prospects include Grant Taylor, Wikelman Gonzalez, Jairo Iriarte, and Mason Adams.
Other than the prospects noted above, the position players of most interest who will be participating in the exhibition game this year are George Wolkow and Caleb Bonemer. Wolkow, 19, battled a high strikeout rate in his first taste of full-season baseball last year. Despite this, he still put together a strong season, showcasing his immense power potential. Bonemer, a second round pick, has yet to make his debut in the White Sox organization. Despite this, scouts are excited about his potential at the plate.
