UPDATE: Yasmani Grandal is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Click here for the latest update!
How much more can this team take? It’s the daily question we’re somehow still asking after watching, what feels like, the majority of the starting lineup being helped off the field at some point.
Tonight, it was catcher Yasmani Grandal who went down with an injury during his sixth-inning at-bat. Yaz checked his swing before spinning out of the box, limping a few steps, and falling to the ground in severe pain. He was eventually helped to the dugout by the training staff and later walked down to the clubhouse under his own power. Though the last part was a positive sign, we now must wait to see what the extent of this leg injury might be.
For the time being, the White Sox have provided the following update and are calling it a strained left calf.
As you’ll remember, Grandal originally left the team’s July 2nd game vs. the Tigers with left calf tightness and missed the remainder of the Detroit series. After feeling good enough to play tonight, the team plugged him in behind the dish without any issues. We just have to hope this injury isn’t a worse continuation of what the 32-year-old was experiencing in Detroit, even though the signs aren’t looking particularly promising.
Factoring in his latest at-bats, Grandal is hitting .188/.388/.824 with 14 home runs and 38 RBI. Any significant amount of time missed would be a major loss to this team, who will undoubtedly utilize the combination of Zack Collins and Seby Zavala during his absence.
We will continue to provide updates as we receive them. Be sure to also follow us on social media @SoxOn35th!
