The White Sox continue to add to their pitching depth this offseason.
This afternoon, the White Sox announced that they have claimed right-handed pitcher A.J. Alexy from the Minnesota Twins. It is not clear whether Alexy will be assigned directly to Charlotte.
Alexy, 25, was an 11th-round draft pick in 2016 by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was part of the Yu Darvish trade back in 2017 that sent him, Willie Calhoun, and Brendon Davis to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Darvish. He struggled in seven innings last year with the Rangers and was eventually claimed off waivers from the Nationals in December 2022. After being traded to the Twins in exchange for Cristian Jimenez just a few weeks ago, he was designated for assignment when the Twins traded for Michael A. Taylor.
Alexy made his major league debut in 2021, and in total, has thrown 30 innings at the major league level. For his career, Alexy has a 4-2 record and a 6.30 ERA. He has a four-pitch mix of a fastball (55.9%), slider (22.4%), curveball (13.2%), and changeup (8.6%) and featured above-average movement on both his fastball and curveball.
Since he has acted as both a starter and reliever throughout his career, the White Sox may use his flexibility in order to fill some starter’s innings at the minor-league level. As you’ll remember, by the end of the year in 2022, the White Sox were incredibly thin at the starting pitcher level in Charlotte, which forced them to use 4-5 pitchers out of the bullpen on a given night. However, given his major league experience, it may not be outside the realm of possibility that Alexy gets some innings at the major league level this year should the White Sox battle some injuries/poor performance from some of their projected bullpen members.
