White Sox claim pitcher Brent Honeywell off waivers

by Michael Suareo

The White Sox announced three roster moves ahead of Saturday night’s game against the Cleveland Guardians.

They have claimed right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell off waivers from the San Diego Padres, selected the contract of Charlotte Knights relief pitcher Lane Ramsey, and placed right-hander Gregory Santos on the Bereavement List.

Honeywell is a former top prospect with the Tampa Bay Rays, ranking as high as 31st on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 back in 2017. Unfortunately, injuries derailed his career, causing a three-year layoff from pitching from 2018-2020. He returned to the mound in 2021, pitching well enough in Triple-A to get promoted to the Rays’ MLB roster that season.

This year, the 28-year-old has been relegated to relief duties for the Padres, pitching 46.2 innings and holding a 4.05 ERA. On a positive note, he has worked at least 1.0 IP in 31 of his appearances and is limiting right-handers to a .237 (23-for-97) batting average.

Honeywell is known for his screwball, which at its best has been considered a double-plus pitch. He is expected to join the White Sox’s major league roster.

Ramsey, 27, has been a pitcher in the White Sox organization since being drafted in the 23rd round back in 2018. He has always been viewed as a prospect with high-leverage reliever upside and is currently ranked as the organization’s 29th best prospect according to Baseball America – although this list has not been updated since before the trade deadline acquisitions.

Injuries have limited Ramsey in the past, with him only logging 27.1 innings in 2022. When he has been healthy. though, he has showcased an impressive ability to get batters to swing and miss with his upper 90’s fastball and hard slider.

So far this season in Triple-A, Ramsey has pitched 36 innings, and while his ERA is an unimpressive 5.50, he has showcased his strikeout ability with a 12 K/9 rate. The right-hander, who has not allowed a run in four of his last five appearances, has no major league experience and will wear uniform No. 68.

Santos is 2-0 with a 2.75 ERA (16 ER/52.1 IP), two saves and 52 strikeouts over a team-high 47 games this season. Santos will remain on the Bereavement List for a minimum of three days and no more than seven, per league rules.

Following today’s moves, the 40-man roster increases to a full 40.

As we get additional information, we will provide further updates.
