The White Sox have a deal with their second of five draft picks. Fourth-rounder Kade Mechals and the organization have reportedly agreed to a $10,000 deal, per MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis. His selection carried a slot value of $517,400.
Mechals, a left-handed pitcher, made three starts with Grand Canyon University this spring going 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA and 18 strikeouts. During his full 2019 campaign, he put up some impressive stats with an 11-1 record, 2.16 ERA, and 100 strikeouts over 16 appearances (15 starts). One thing to note with Mechals is that he just underwent Tommy John surgery in May, so he will be sidelined for well over a year.
Following yesterday’s Coffey deal, the White Sox have now saved a combined $1,190,500 in pool money. All of those funds, along with any additional savings from fifth-rounder Bailey Horn, will be used towards signing the second-round prep arm Jared Kelley. Assuming first-rounder Garrett Crochet gets his full slot value of $4,547,500 and Horn doesn’t sign for more than $20,000, Kelley should be left with a little over $3 million of the team’s $7,764,800 pool.
We will have further updates on the remainder of the signings here on our website and on social media @SoxOn35th!
