According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the White Sox have continued to add to their front office staff for 2025, hiring former Angels manager Phil Nevin to be part of their player development staff. According to Nightengale, Nevin will play a role in amateur scouting for the 2025 Draft and be involved in other player development roles.
Nevin, 52, was rumored to be a finalist for the White Sox’ managerial position, which eventually led to Will Venable’s hiring. Last winter, Nevin also interviewed with the Padres for their managerial opening. After playing 12 MLB seasons, Nevin began his professional coaching career in independent baseball before signing on with the Tigers to be their Double-A manager in 2010. He spent time with the Diamondbacks and Giants before spending five seasons as the Yankees’ third base coach. Following the 2021 season, he became the Angels’ third base coach and eventually their interim manager after Joe Maddon was fired in 2022 and signed on for an additional year with a club option for 2024. That was ultimately declined after he went 119-149 over his two seasons at the helm from 2022-23. Nevin was very popular among players because of his personal skills.
Three of Nevin’s former Angels staff members are already with the White Sox: bullpen coach Matt Wise, hitting coach Marcus Thames, and catching coach Drew Butera. Should Chris Getz provide any additional information on Nevin’s role, we will continue to provide updates. However, consider this another move where Getz might be asked to reduce the payroll this year on the field, but off the field continues to make waves towards a true overhaul.
