White Sox name Grady Sizemore interim manager

by Jordan Lazowski

The Great South Side Purge is continuing.

After the White Sox announced this morning that they were firing Pedro Grifol, more information has continued to come out regarding the team’s coaching situation for the next two months – and it won’t include Charlie Montoyo, Mike Tosar, or Eddie Rodriguez.

The White Sox have released an additional statement naming Grady Sizemore their interim manager while firing the trio of aforementioned coaches connected to Grifol. Both Tosar and Rodriguez joined Grifol directly from Kansas City, so their connections are the deepest and made the most sense with Grifol gone. Montoyo was brought on after managing the Blue Jays earlier in his coaching career.

Sizemore, 42, is in his first season as a major league coach with the White Sox. He previously served as a minor-league instructor with the Guardians and a coach with the Arizona Complex League Diamondbacks in 2023. While likely not the long-term solution at the helm, Sizemore will have a chance to get some managerial experience under his belt with a new-look staff.

Joining the former Cleveland outfielder will be Doug Sisson as co-bench coach alongside Drew Butera, Triple-A Charlotte skipper Justin Jirschele as third base coach, and Mike Gellinger as assistant hitting coach.

Jirschele is one of the more intriguing names in all of this, as he’s currently in his eighth season as a manager in the White Sox minor league system. He hails from a notable baseball family and has previous experience as the assistant field coordinator and a hitting coach in the Sox system. While Jirschele could be an intriguing name in the managerial search, his odds aren’t favorable as Getz has said the team will prioritize an outside hire.

This is a developing story. More information to come as Chris Getz speaks to the media at 11:30 CST.
