The White Sox have decided to move on from a familiar name.
According to multiple reports, first baseman and outfielder Gavin Sheets has been non-tendered and will now become a free agent. The decision comes as all 30 MLB teams have until 7 p.m. CT on Friday to “tender” a contract for the 2025 season to players who are under club control.
Sheets, 28, was estimated to make $2.6 million in arbitration this offseason, which likely led to this outcome after his underwhelming 2024 season. In 139 games, the former second-round draft pick slashed just .233/.303/.357 with 10 home runs, 45 RBI, an 88 wRC+, and -0.9 fWAR. Though he could be considered valuable as a situational lefty bat, his poor offensive output in 2024 diminished that notion and has led him to the open market.
Following the decision to move on from Sheets, the White Sox announced that right-hander Enyel De Los Santos would be joining him as a free agent, declining to tender him a contract. Notably, first baseman Andrew Vaughn found himself on the opposite end of the spectrum despite much debate as he’s projected to earn $6.4 million in arbitration. Pitchers Garrett Crochet, Justin Anderson, and Steven Wilson join the former third overall pick in also being tendered.
